Frequently Asked Questions
What styles of music do you teach?
I teach rock, blues, metal, and pop, from absolute beginner to advanced level. I also use classical and jazz theory and some fusion elements in my teaching.
What styles you DO NOT teach?
I do not teach classical and flamenco guitar. I can teach, but I do not specialize in, jazz and country.
Why you do not teach all styles?
Because, quite frankly, nobody can. There is not enough time in a single life to master all these playing styles at the level required for being a good teacher. People who are claiming to teach ALL styles are just after your money.
I am a beginner and I have no talent. Is talent important?
No, talent is NOT important. You would be surprised if you knew how many of today's virtuoso guitarists were completely without talent in their beginnings. What is important is 1) How much you WANT to improve your playing 2) How clear are your goals 3) Quantity and especially quality of practice. Just a bit of focused work will give you more mileage than raw talent.
Do you start by teaching how to read music?
No, definitely not. In my view, music is very similar to a language. When a child learns a language, he first learn how to speak (i.e. play), then he learns how to read while learning the grammar (i.e. music theory). Teaching music reading and music theory before teaching how to play would be like giving a grammar book to a 2 years old.
Some people of course have the will and the stamina (or are just forced by their teachers) to learn music reading first - but this does not mean it is the best way to learn.
What will you teach me the first lesson?
I can not answer that question until I know more about you, your present situation and your ultimate musical goals. I do not teach the same thing to everyone. If you are a beginner, I will design a curriculum for you. If you are an intermediate/advanced player, why don't YOU tell me what you want to learn and I will show you how to do it.
